Importing a Manuscript

Bring your existing manuscript into Codiko and turn it into a fully structured project.

Supported Formats

  • .docx — Word documents
  • .pdf — PDF files
  • .txt — Plain text files
  • .md — Markdown files
  • .rtf — Rich text files

How to Import

  1. On the welcome screen, click “New from Import”
  2. Select your manuscript file
  3. The import wizard detects your chapter and scene structure automatically
  4. Review the detected structure — rename chapters, adjust scene boundaries, or merge/split as needed
  5. Optionally run AI entity extraction to detect characters, locations, items, plot events, and relationships
  6. Review the extracted entities before committing — edit names, roles, and descriptions
  7. Click “Create Project” to finish

You’ll land in a fully structured project with your manuscript, timeline, and canon pages ready to go.

Formatting Tips

The importer uses heuristics to detect chapter and scene boundaries. For best results:

  • Use # Chapter Title or ## Chapter Title headings in Markdown
  • In Word or plain text, use lines like “Chapter 1”, “Part One”, or numbered headings
  • Separate scenes with ***, ---, or # # # on their own line

If your manuscript doesn’t have clear markers, the wizard will do its best with heuristics. You can always adjust the result manually before creating the project.

AI Entity Extraction

During import, you can optionally run AI extraction. This processes your manuscript in chunks and creates entries for characters, locations, items, plot events, and relationships it finds. Each entity type gets a dedicated extraction pass so nothing is missed, even in long manuscripts.

This requires an AI provider to be configured (see AI Overview).
